These forms were created collectively with women at a shelter in New York City. I was initially thinking about the idea of worry dolls — making these small creatures as a sort of therapeutic exercise. They also feel like odes to the beloved earthwork artist Ana Mendieta, who has influenced so many of us and who died too young. There is something strange and powerful and old in this shape, repeated over and over again.
