Early explorations of a collection of suspended lotus seed pods. I will be attending Yaddo this summer to develop this body of work -- sculptures and writing around collecting, abundance, greed and enlightenment, through a gathering of American Lotus seed pods. I am drawn to the flower heads for their intricacy, full of holes holding seeds.

I have started a suspended installation of the pods, part of a larger practice of gathering a mass of materials such as snail shells or glass jars, and repurposing them into sculptures. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts, addressing our primal desire for abundance and fullness.

In this moment where we are caught in a cycle of overconsumption, I am drawn to the lotus because while their form full of seeds satisfies a fullness, they also symbolize enlightenment and renewal in many cultures: through dark muddy waters, long stalks arrive at the surface and unfold in the light.
